Calum Simpson is a BSc-qualified personal trainer in Aberdeen, specialising in mental health coaching, movement, and strength training. Based at Lightning Fitness on Wellington Circle, he helps people from Aberdeen, Cove Bay, Torry and Altens build a stronger body and a stronger mind — together.

Fifteen years in this industry teaches you one thing above all: the people who last aren't the ones with the toughest routines. They're the ones whose training fits the life they're actually living. That's the kind of work Calum does.

Having lived through poor mental health himself, Calum understands — not academically, but personally — what exercise can do when it's approached with honesty and patience. Sessions blend physical training with the kind of conversation that actually helps: sleep, stress, energy, and what it takes to keep showing up.

Real questions, real answers.

Do I need gym experience to train with you?

No. The majority of people I work with are starting from scratch, coming back after a long break, or rebuilding their confidence. Every session is paced to you, and the first thing we build is competence — the weights follow.

How does the mental health coaching work?

Mental health is woven through every session, not treated as a separate add-on. We talk about energy, sleep, stress, and mindset alongside training, and I draw on my own experience of poor mental health to keep it honest and practical — not clinical. If you want training that respects your head as much as your body, this is exactly that.

Where are you based in Aberdeen?

Lightning Fitness is at Unit B, Wellington Circle, Aberdeen AB12 3QW — south of the city, five minutes from Cove Bay and Altens. Free parking on-site, so no circling the car park before a session.

What does a typical first session look like?

We start with a conversation, not a barrage of assessments. I want to understand what brought you here, what has and hasn't worked before, and what a win looks like for you. Then we move — gently, at your pace — so I can see how your body actually moves before I prescribe a thing.

How quickly will I see results?

Most clients feel sharper within two weeks — better sleep, more energy, a noticeable lift in mood. Visible changes follow at around six to eight weeks. The bigger shift is a sustainable relationship with training that lasts years, not a crash diet that lasts six weeks.

Do you offer online coaching?

Yes. Online programming is available for clients outside Aberdeen, or for anyone who wants an in-person kickstart followed by remote support. Message me on WhatsApp and we'll work out the format that fits your life.
